Professor Joseph Efeyemineni Oromafunu Abugu (SAN) stands out as one of Nigeria’s most respected scholars in Commercial and Industrial Law. With a career spanning more than three decades, he has built a reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and legal practice. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and long‑serving academic at the University of Lagos, Professor Abugu has dedicated his professional life to advancing knowledge in Company and Securities Law, Industrial Law, and Banking Law.
His academic journey began at Urhobo College, Effurun, followed by further studies at the Centre for Business Studies in London. He later earned degrees from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Lagos, where he would eventually rise to the rank of professor in 2012. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989, he joined the University of Lagos faculty in 1995 and has since contributed significantly to the institution’s academic growth.
Professor Abugu has held several influential roles, including Editor of the Gravitas Review of Business & Property Law, member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, and Coordinator of the Advanced Diploma in Commercial Law and Practice. His expertise in securities regulation has also made him a sought‑after consultant in both public and private sectors.
His career has been enriched by international engagements, serving as a Rotary International Exchange Ambassador to Arizona, a Fulbright Scholar at Chicago‑Kent College of Law, and an ILO Training Fellow in Turin, Italy. These experiences have broadened his global perspective and strengthened his contributions to legal scholarship.
A prolific writer, Professor Abugu is the author of Companies Securities: Law and Practice and the editor of the Nigerian Company and Securities Law Reports (1958–2017), both of which remain important resources in the field. Beyond academia, he continues to play a leadership role in cultural and intellectual development as the President of the Urhobo Renaissance Society.
